The towns of Capri and Anacapri make up the island of Capri.
On the western side of the island is the town of Capri. On the eastern side of the island is another town called Anacapri. Whether you are visiting the island of Capri on a day trip or spending a longer amount of time there, Anacapri is definitely worth a visit.
How to get there
There are ferries from Naples and Sorrento that regularly bring travellers to the island of Capri. The ferry port is located in the town of Capri, so that will have to be your first stop on the island. Then, you can decide how you would like to get to Anacapri.
Due to its elevation, it’s important to consider your options for getting from Capri to Anacapri. The first option is to take the funicular. The railway takes passengers uphill to Anacapri in about five minutes. The second option is to catch a public bus, which takes around ten minutes. The third option is to take a chairlift to the top of Mount Solaro. The final option is to walk. There is a scenic stairway made of about 1,000 steps and the walk takes around an hour.
What to do
The town of Capris is great if you like partying, luxury boutiques, and beach time. Anacapri is great if you prefer a quieter destination, enjoy hiking, and prefer locally crafted goods.
So, what should you do when visiting Anacapri?
Visit Monte Solaro
Mount Solaro is one of the most popular attractions in Anacapri. It offers unparalleled views across the island of Capri. Atop the mountain, you can even see onward to Naples and Mount Vesuvius.
When visiting Mount Solaro, you can either follow the hiking path or enjoy a scenic chairlift ride to the top of the mountain. We recommend visiting in the morning or later in the day to avoid crowds.
Check out Villa San Michele
Another popular attraction in Anacapri is the Villa San Michelle. The villa houses an array of fascinating art pieces including a Sphinx and mosaics. There is also a well-manicured garden that you can walk around to take in the scenery.
Stroll through the historic centre
The historic centre of Anacapri is home to a range of fascinating attractions. The Church of San Michele is decorated with a beautiful mosaic that covers the entire floor. The Casa Rossa Museum is an eccentric red house with unique architecture. Piazza Boffe is home to a quaint church with a charming square full of colourful benches and cafes.
Climb up the Phoenician Steps
The Phoenician Steps are an iconic part of the island of Capri. They connect the lower part of the island to the upper part of the island. At one point, the cliffside stairway used to be the only way to access Anacapri. If you’re up for it, the 921 steps are worth the hike to take in the spectacular views.
Admire the Blue Grotto
The Blue Grotto is one of the most iconic destinations on the island of Capri. The Blue Grotto is a small cave with water that appears to be glowing blue. The cave is only accessible by small boats, but you won’t want to miss this unique phenomenon.
