Venice is such a special place that it might seem like you should spend your entire getaway there. But there’s a series of lesser-known islands just off the mainland that only add to the region’s outstanding beauty. Across an extensive 4.5-hour trip, you’ll experience the unique sights offered by the islands of Murano, Burano and Torcello and find out how these places highlight history that dates back to Italy’s earliest periods.
Led by an expert tour guide throughout the day, the first stop on this adventure is on the island of Murano. Climb aboard your boat and leave behind the city of Venice as you sail past the striking islands of San Giorgio Maggiore, San Servolo, San Lazzaro degli Armeni and the Sant’Elena Gardens. Throughout the last few centuries, Murano’s reputation has been built on its stellar glasswork, which you’ll get to experience up-close as we take a tour of a glass factory and discover why glassblowing has remained an important industry here since 1291.
The second stop on this journey across Venetia’s islands is Burano. Immediately recognisable by the village’s homes, which have been painted in a series of vibrant colours, the island is known across Europe for its incredible hand-woven lace. Having been a local tradition of the town’s residents for the last five centuries, even today it’s still considered to be some of the finest you can find anywhere around the world. During our time on Burano, we’ll also roam the town square and explore its famous tower alongside San Martino’s Church, which is where you’ll find the famous “Crucifixion” painting by Tiepolo.
The last stop on this boat tour is the island of Torcello. Widely considered to be the township that eventually spread to populate the rest of Venice in the 5th-century, there’s a remarkable range of historic monuments that have survived since ancient times. Featuring some of Italy’s oldest churches and palaces, we’ll visit the Byzantine Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta and the Church of Santa Fosca, which showcases a stunning portico and Byzantine interior.
Venice and its world-famous waterways might still be the region’s top highlight, but as you’ll discover on this tour, there are still plenty of outstanding reasons to escape the crowds on the charming islands of Murano, Burano and Torcello.
