There’s a lot more to Venice than just beautiful canals. The city also has a stellar reputation for incredible food and wine that keeps travellers coming back to the Floating City. Across this 2.5-hour culinary adventure, we’ll head inside the local taverns known as ‘bacaro’ and experience delightfully authentic Venetian cuisine with samples of local wine called ‘ombra’ and a series of traditional side dishes called ‘cicchetto’. In addition to great flavours, throughout this tour, we’ll explore some of Venice’s most renowned landmarks such as the Rialto Bridge, the Rialto Market and the Grand Canal, which we’ll cross with a ride in a gondola.
Led by an expert guide, we’ll begin our journey from the bustling Campo San Bartolomeo. Our first stop is just around the corner at the world-famous Rialto Bridge, which is the oldest and most beautiful of the bridges that span across the Grand Canal. We’ll continue onwards into Erbaria Square, which is where we’ll discover Venice’s first church, the San Giacomo di Rialto. Just nearby is our first bacaro – head inside and sample two tasty cicchetti that are paired with wine or spritz.
Rialto is the commercial hub of Venice, and the Rialto Market is where the locals shop. This is the next stop on this tour as we explore the hundreds of vendors selling high-quality fruit, vegetables and seafood that keep the city fed. As you roam the market, your guide will explain the vibrant history of this place, as well as the many ingredients that are central to Venetian cuisine.
Leaving behind the market to get to the other side of the Grand Canal, we’ll hop aboard a gondola and enjoy one of Venice’s favourite pastimes. Pushed along by a professional gondolier, once we reach our destination, we’ll head along Strada Nova and into the charming Campo Santi Apostoli. This is where we’ll visit our second bacaro as we taste another delightful assortment of ombra and cicchetti.
On the walk to our final bacaro, we’ll pass by historic landmarks like the Court of the Milion and the Marco Polo House. Quickly reaching our last stop, a team of professional Venetian chefs have prepared a special risotto that goes perfectly with a glass of wine and a dessert – the ideal way to end this tantalising and traditional foodie adventure.
