For any visitor exploring Italy, the draw of Pompeii is hard to overlook. That’s because it’s simply one of the most important historical sites you can visit anywhere in the world. And our Pompeii Guided Tour will show you the very best of what the city has to offer. Supported by an expert local guide, you’ll get to wander these perfectly preserved streets and hear the fascinating stories behind the city’s famously tragic demise.
Looming in the distance is Mount Vesuvius, a towering volcano that in 79 AD erupted with such force that it plunged the city of Pompeii under a thick layer of ash. Having completed destroyed the city, Pompeii lay buried for 1700 years before the city was rediscovered in the 18th-century leading to a large-scale excavation. Having been hidden underground without moisture or air damaging the city’s remains, Pompeii remains remarkably intact for its age. Considered one of the great archaeological finds of modern history, it presents incredible insight into the lives of the Pompeiians and similar ancient cultures.
The tour begins at Pompeii’s main entrance known as the Marina Gate. We’ll quickly continue onwards into the Basilica, the oldest and most important surviving building found here. With many more Greco-Roman sites to explore, soon we’ll make our way into the Forum, the city’s main square that’s flanked by a series of ruins that were once municipal buildings. Then, it’s onto the Macellum of Pompeii, which was essentially the city’s commercial hub where citizens would have bought their bread, fish and meat.
As you move through the illustrious streets, you’ll get to visit a variety of places that the everyday townspeople of Pompeii would have visited regularly. From thermal baths to bakeries and religious monuments, there’s also the House of the Vettii, which features vibrant paintings emblematic of the Roman Empire. You’ll also get to tour Pompeii’s famous brothel known as Lupanar. This place features a series of erotic paintings that were considered too threatening for the public and locked away until the year 2000.
If you’re looking to experience the marvellous architecture and monuments of Pompeii, our Pompeii Guided Tour makes sure even the most enthusiastic of history buffs discovers something new about this must-visit ancient destination.
