Guided tour of the Accademia Gallery
Marvel at Michelangelo's famous masterpiece the Statue of David
Free time to explore the Accademia at your own pace at the end of the tour
There aren’t many artists throughout history whose work has stood the test of time like Michelangelo’s has. Born in a small town in Tuscany, the metropolis of Florence would eventually become his home, as well as the spot where he’d confirm his place in history. Today, the Accademia Gallery is where you can view many of his famous artworks, as this guided tour takes you inside and provides you with some wonderful insight into the life of this truly great but troubled artist.
Led by a dedicated art-loving guide, there won’t be any delay exploring the incredible collection of masterpieces as our Skip the Line tickets take you straight inside. Built in 1784, the Accademia Gallery was originally intended to be an art school but over the last two hundred years has been transformed into an art and museum space that has become one of the most highly respected in the world.
Alongside beautiful works such as Giambologna’s sculptures and Domenico Ghirlandaio’s paintings, Michelangelo is the standout attraction at the Accademia Gallery. We’ll have plenty of time to roam its storied corridors and get an up-close look at some of Michelangelo’s most renowned creations, including ‘San Matteo’ and ‘I Prigioni’. Meanwhile, the best is yet to come as eventually we’ll make our way to the headline artwork, ‘David’. Carved from a huge single piece of marble, this masterpiece stands over five-metres tall as it recalls the biblical story of David and Goliath. It’s undeniably some of Michelangelo’s most stunning work as you admire how he conveyed David’s preparation to battle the beast.
Elsewhere in the Accademia, you’ll also get to visit Michelangelo’s ‘Non-finito’ works, which are a collection of incomplete marble sculptures. Today, historians are still debating over whether these blocks were left deliberately unfinished, but either way, they add an additional layer of intrigue to the artist’s collection of work. Your guide will also delve into the story of Michelangelo besides his artistic talents, in which historical documents demonstrate that he was a man who struggled between hidden desires and religious devotion.
As we complete our wander through the hallways, our tour will come to an end. However, you’re free to stay and explore this astounding gallery, which remains one of Florence’s most important cultural landmarks and a clear favourite amongst history and art lovers.
