When it comes to ancient cities that are more beautiful than ever, Pisa simply can’t be beaten. This bustling historic setting might be best known for its Leaning Tower, but throughout its pristine architectural complex, there are a host of other fascinating landmarks that you simply have to explore.
Join our half-day tour as we leave behind Florence and cruise through Tuscany’s sunny rolling hills. Admire the charming stone villages and wine estates that dot the landscape as we eventually arrive at Pisa’s Piazza dei Miracoli – the Square of Miracles – which is home to four immense Pisan Romanesque monuments.
Set against a sprawling lush green lawn, millions come to this one wide-open space to visit the world-famous Pisa Cathedral, the Baptistery, the Camposanto and the Leaning Tower all within one location. Led by an expert tour guide, get an up-close look at these centuries-old buildings, as you listen to the many captivating stories behind these spectacular white marble edifices.
As we make our way around the square, we’ll eventually come to the front of Pisa Cathedral. Featuring a wonderfully intricate façade, as we head inside, you’ll be welcomed by a series of towering granite pillars. Found throughout this monumental space, explore the structure’s astounding collection of marble, bronze and mosaic artworks, which are positioned everywhere from the walls to the ceiling.
The Baptistery is our next stop as we stand outside and consider this remarkable example of Classical and Renaissance-era architecture. Designed by Diotisalvi, this marvellous structure dates back to 1153, and you can still see the architect’s signature engraved in two of its pillars. From the striking cupola to the marble columns, it’s an extraordinary place to visit. Meanwhile, the massive Camposanto marks the burial site for many of Pisa’s most significant upper-class families, while also featuring some infamously gory frescos.
Finally, we’ll continue onwards to Pisa’s headline attraction – the Leaning Tower. One of the world’s most famous buildings, your guide will explain how this structure came to be one of the symbols of Italy. This is where our tour ends, but you’re free to head into the city of Pisa and discover its historic streets and landmarks. Pay a visit to the San Sisto Church or the Piazza dei Cavalieri’s Cathedral and you’ll immediately understand why travellers love Pisa.
