Presented inside a stunning 17th-century mansion, the Borghese Gallery is one of the most prominent art galleries in the world. The beautiful structure was commissioned by Cardinal Scipione Borghese and has since become recognised as an important icon of the Renaissance era. You’ll also find out about its original owner and his well-documented love of art, especially the works produced by some if Italy’s most respected and high-brow artisans. Spread across two floors and 20 opulent rooms, the Borghese Gallery is essentially split into two sections of masterpieces with the first showcasing paintings, while the second features priceless marble sculptures.
Since the mansion was first established as a gallery in 1903, it has continued to provide a space to view the works of many of Italy’s most famous painters. On display here, you’ll get the chance to see artworks by the likes of Raffaello, Bernini, Tiziano, Antonello da Messina, and Correggio, while the Borghese’s most celebrated permanent work is ‘Venus Victorious’ by Antonio Canova. You’ll almost certainly recognise this large-scale neo-Classical sculpture, which depicts a reclining Pauline Bonaparte.
Once you’ve finished exploring inside, it’s time to head out into the Villa Borghese, or the Borghese Gardens. This lush place is said to have been the ancient Roman citizen’s favourite green spot – and it’s easy to see why as the 200 acres of stunning landscaped gardens continue to impress visitors centuries later. As you roam these picturesque gardens, don’t miss the Pincio Terrace. It’s a charming spot that offers one of the best available views of Rome’s cityscape.
