A gondola tour of Venice is on the bucket list of many travellers. The image of elegant boats gliding down the canals is synonymous with the city and may be more affordable than you think! Board our shared gondola and allow your gondolier to show you some of the best sights along the Venetian canals.
Begin your 30-minute journey near the entrance to the Grand Canal, a perfect starting point from which to launch into your tour of the waterways. From here you will drift past many of the most beautiful buildings that line the canals. See the striking Church of La Salute with its ornate stone carvings, the elegant Peggy Guggenheim Museum, and then float beneath the wooden arch of the Accademia Bridge. These sights mark different stages in Venice’s history, demonstrating architecture from its powerful and wealthy past.
In addition to these landmarks, the Grand Canal affords views to some of Venice’s most recognisable sights such as the latticed front of the Doge’s Palace and the towering Campanile, also known as Saint Mark’s Belltower. You will also see the magnificent gallery that juts out into the water and marks where the Grand Canal and the Giudecca Canal meet, the Punta della Dogana. Instantly recognisable from the sculptures of two Atlases holding a golden globe on which Fortune sits, this ex-customs house now holds one of the largest collections of contemporary art in the world.
After travelling along the most famous stretch of canal, you will veer off into the lesser-seen, but equally as picturesque, minor canals. Though small, these waterways connect much of Venice and are wonderful to explore. From your gondola, you will spot the Teatro la Fenice, Palazzo Molin del Cuoridoro, and the 16th-century home to many aristocrats, Palazzo Marin. Reach out and touch the walls of the buildings and the magnificent low bridges that you pass beneath.
At the end of your tour, your gondolier will return you to the starting point. From here you can wander off into the streets of Venice and either discover more of the unique wonders of the city or revisit the highlights of your gondola tour and delve more deeply into their fabulous past.
