In its prime, it could have seated 5,000 people as they poured in to watch whatever form of entertainment was being performed. If you get a chance, then climb to the top row and enjoy views over the city and toward Mount Vesuvius.
Find out about another popular pastime in Pompeii by visiting the brothels. Pompeii’s largest brothel is the Lupanar, a 10 roomed complex that features stone blocks that would have been topped by a mattress for a bed. Erotic images are painted across the walls and some suggest that these were both a menu of services and a tool to get customers ‘in the mood’.
In the eastern corner of Pompeii is the amphitheatre, the oldest surviving Roman amphitheatre dating to the year 80 BC. Hear about the forms of entertainment that were put on here and how up to 12,000 spectators could witness them at any one time.
One of the most poignant parts of your tour will be viewing the casts of the victims in the antiquarium and around the site. These models were made when archaeologists found spaces within the volcanic debris. They poured liquid plaster into them and once they had hardened, they revealed incredible casts of the victims of Pompeii.
