The Gulf of Naples, also called the Bay of Naples, is known for its unique and scenic landscape.
Located on the southwest coast of Italy, the Gulf of Naples is a must-visit destination.
On one end of the gulf is Naples, while the other end is where Sorrento is located. The gulf offers stunning views from an inlet, looking out to the Mediterranean Sea. When standing in the perfect spot, you can take in panoramic views of Mount Vesuvius and the Island of Capri.
There is so much to see and do when visiting the Gulf of Naples, so here are a few highlights.
• Explore the islands of Capri, Ischia, and Procida
You have probably already heard of Capri, but have you heard of the other ones?
The island of Ischia is known for its nature and thermal baths, earning it the name of the “green island”. There are lots of restaurants to check out in between exploring historic archaeological sites. There is also a castle on the island!
Procida is another island that can be explored. It’s hard to miss this island as the buildings give it a vibrant pop of colour. It boasts a medieval village, panoramic views, and amazing beaches – just to name a few things.
There is a third island in the Gulf of Naples called Nisida, but this one is off-limits to the public. It is home to a juvenile detention centre and is used for reintegration projects including sports, arts, and other workshops.
• Take a train to Vesuvius National Park
Vesuvius National Park is full of various paths to explore, each leading to a spectacular scenic view. The Circumvesuviana Railway is a convenient way to get to the national park if you don’t have a car to get there on your own.
• Check out the Parco sommerso di Gaiola
This is a protected marine area nestled in the Gulf of Naples. You can jump in the water and explore the sea via kayaking, snorkelling or diving. Or you can stay on land and take in the scenery of the water lily ponds and the Imperial Villa of Pausilypon.
