Rome is a major city in Italy, so how expensive is it?
Rome is one of the more expensive cities in Italy, but it isn’t as expensive as other cities in Europe. However, if you are visiting and hoping for a cheap holiday, it will seem a bit pricey.
The higher prices in Rome are partially due to the popular tourist attractions, which draw in millions of visitors every year. As with any large city, prices are always going to be higher than the surrounding towns and villages.
Tips for a cheaper holiday
Just because you’re visiting a city that can be expensive, doesn’t mean that you have to break the bank. There are a few ways to keep your holiday budget-friendly.
-
Food
The best way to save money on food is to either cook for yourself or avoid the most touristy locations. Restaurants located in busy “tourist spots” will likely be more expensive than other restaurants. If you do want to eat in a busy location, take a stroll and browse the menu to see which restaurant best matches your budget.
-
Lodging
There are plenty of affordable options for lodging in Rome. As with any city, you can spend more money for a luxurious experience, or you can spend less and still have your needs met. There are lots of great options on websites such as AirB&B. Alternatively, if you don’t mind sharing your space with others, hostels are a great way to go.
-
Transportation
Rome is a very accessible city, with most things being within walking distance. The most expensive thing you can do is take a taxi, so it’s best to avoid those if you are on a budget. If it seems too far to walk someplace, check out the public transportation. There are options for buses, trams, trains and the metro system.
-
Free things
While you have to pay for lots of activities in Rome, there are also heaps of free things to do. You can stroll through scenic parks, view the stunning architecture and check out free museums. Some of the free museums include the Museu Carlo Bilotti, the Museo della Mura and the Museo Napoleonico.
