Rome offers a look into a bygone age like few other cities around the world. And this incredible one-day tour will lead you through many of the city’s most unmissable landmarks as your expert guide details the intriguing stories behind these wonderful sights.
You’ll begin your tour at the Vatican where you head straight past the queues with your Skip the Line tickets. As we head inside to the Cortile del Belvedere, you’ll get a spectacular view of St Peter’s Basilica. This massive interior courtyard is a great place to get up close and personal with a wealth of priceless sculptures, which your guide will be able to provide excellent insight into.
Next, we’ll move on to the lavish Raphael Rooms where you’ll get to experience an eclectic range of tapestries, paintings and sculptures. These four glamorous rooms take their name from the High Renaissance painter Raphael, whose stunning grand fresco overhead is also a must-see.
But the best is yet to come. Once we move inside the Sistine Chapel, you’ll likely immediately recognise Michelangelo’s celebrated fresco. Painted between 1508 and 1512, the barrel-vaulted ceiling comes to life with an enormous religious work of art.
Finally, we’ll arrive at St Peter’s Basilica – the world’s largest church and Vatican City’s most prominent building. Our jam-packed tour concludes here, but you’re free to explore this magnificent building and its breathtaking collection of masterpieces, including Michelangelo’s ‘Pietà’ and Bernini’s bronze canopy known as St. Peter’s Baldachin.
Following a break for lunch, we’ll reconvene outside the Colosseum and skip the line once again. Once inside, immerse yourself within the remarkable structure’s 2000-year-old architecture, which everyone knows as the gory battleground of the illustrious gladiators. Having heard the extraordinary stories behind the Colosseum, we’ll head back outside and down the cobblestone street to the nearby Roman Forum.
This historic section of the city features some of Rome’s most significant ancient ruins and was discovered to be the central commercial and social precinct for Roman citizens of the time. Once we’ve finished exploring here, we’ll make for the nearby summit of Palatine Hill – the position where Romulus is said to have founded the city. Wander the remnants of the Palace of Domitian and don’t miss the chance to capture the striking panoramic views that stretch back across the Roman Forum and the city’s ancient heritage.
